When shopping for a new deck, one very important consideration is how environmentally safe a product is. After all, an outdoor deck will effect its environment, as well as the health of anyone who uses it.

Cumaru decking steps up to the eco friendly challenge and overcomes it with flying colors. Being wood, cumaru is naturally ecologically sound. Of course, the first argument that is sure to crop up is that since we must cut down trees to harvest this wood, it is inherently unfriendly to the ecosystem. But such a claim is a gross oversimplification.

While clear cutting acres of jungle is harmful to the environment, sustainable harvesting can actually be beneficial. By practicing sustainable forestry methods, lumber companies are careful to only cut down what can grow back. By properly managing a forest like this, they can even prevent natural dangers like forest fires. But it does not stop there. Irresponsible forestry is actually harmful to the lumber companies, since eventually there would be no more trees to harvest, and they would go out of business. As long as there is a strong demand for responsibly harvested cumaru lumber, the wood companies will make sure that healthy forests are protected.

If you want to be sure that your cumaru decking has been harvested sustainably, check for FSC certification. The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is the most reputable lumber product certification system, and the only one that is accepted if you are working towards LEED credits.

So, since cumaru decking is inherently eco friendly, the only thing that could hurt its ranking is human tampering. For instance, pressure treated pine is impregnated with lots of toxic chemicals in order to make it stronger. These chemicals are harmful to both the environment and humans. However, cumaru decking is so strong by itself, it needs no chemical additives to improve its performance.

Although cumaru is so durable that it is unlikely to ever need replacing, should you decide to get rid of your deck, the boards, being one hundred percent natural, are completely biodegradable. That is nature's way of recycling and putting nutrients back into the soil, paving the way for new life.

Taking all this into account, it is clear to see that cumaru decking is a very eco friendly option.
